The great australian bight region is of great conservation significance. It supports some of the highest levels of marine diversity and endemism found anywhere in Australian, particularly among red algae, sea squirts, shellfish, sea urchins and stars and bryozoans. It also provides the most significant habitat and calving grounds for the endangered southern right whale and endemic Australian sea lion.n
