A Study on the Profitability of Grouper Farming in Buleleng Regency, Bali-Indonesia
Indonesia is an archipelago country with 17,508 islands and $4,716 km of coastline where it has enormous potential for the development of marine aquaculture. Marine aquaculture business in the Buleleng Regency is supported by suitable geographic conditions so that it has great potential to be developed. The hatchery technologies have been developed in Buleleng Regency. Proper farming management need to be identified to answer the challenges of aquaculture development in Indonesia. Furthermore, finding out the economic viability of marine aquaculture farming may answer the challenges of aquaculture development in Indonesia. The general objective of this study is to identify the impact of marine aquaculture activities socio-economically especially in Buleleng Regency, Bali. Specifically, this study aims to (1) identify perspective of coastal community toward marine aquaculture; (2) identify the production practices of marine aquaculture in study area; (3) analyses the profitability of well-established milkfish and newly developed grouper hatcheries in Buleleng Regency and (4) estimate cost and profitability of grouper farming in Buleleng Regency. The data for this study was collected from a field survey in August 2019 and February 2020. Primary data have been collected during field survey through an interview with the grouper and milkfish farmer in hatcheries (n=23) and grouper farmer in floating net cage (n-20), Secondary data have been obtained from local institute. The collected data will be analyzed using mixed method analysis to combining quantitative data and qualitative data. The characteristics of farmers in terms of average age and education did not differ significantly among two groups, but in terms of years of experience farmers in the hatcheries have a longer work experience compared to farmers in floating net cage. For the technological and management aspect, both hatcheries and floating net cage have different characteristic from one to another. Grouper farming business in Buleleng Regency is mostly oriented with small-scale business size in the hatchery area. Production cost is one of the major factors affecting profitability in grouper farming. The cost of seed, feed and labor are the most significant expenditure in grouper farming. The cost benefit analysis shows that cost-benefit ratios of hatchery and floating net cage were greater than one. Variability of grouper fingerlings in the market is one of factor that influenced the revenue of each hatchery and floating net cage.
