This book is a work in progress: it is part of a larger effort, which is to tell the story of a legacy, the legacy of the Indonesian statesman Ali Alatas who served as the country’s foreign minister from 1988 to 1999. As to this book, it is by no means being offered as the one that Minister Alatas would have written on the GRP-MNLF process. It gives the reader no access to the personal thoughts and insights of Minister Alatas. Besides, many important data on the conduct of the negotiations have yet to be unearthed by research. Hence, research must continue for the sake of a fuller historiography on this watershed peace process. This book, however, tells the essential story of the peace process, a story worth telling, and as such serves as a tribute to the legacy of Minister Alatas.
