Climate and Weather Information Services in Supporting Adaptation and Mitigation

World Climate Conference-3 (Geneva, 2009) decided to establish a Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS), a UN-led initiative spearheaded by WMO. The vision of GFCS is to enable society to better manage the risks and opportunities arising from climate variability and change, especially for those who are most vulnerable to such risks. This will be done through the development and incorporation of science-based climate information and prediction into planning, policy and practice. The scope and thrusts of GFCS encompass five initial priority areas, namely Agriculture and food security, Disaster risk reduction, Energy, Health, and Water. National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) play an important role in the provision of climate services at the national level that are needed in support of the NAP process. The work of NMHSs can contribute to enhancing the safety and well-being of society, ending poverty, sustaining development and economic growth, improving access to clean drinking water, enhancing food production, achieving good health outcomes, mitigating and adapting to climate change.
