Indonesia Journey To The History Of Cultural
While cultural policy has its origins in liberal techniques of government, in Indonesia authoritarian cultural policy held sway for much of the twentieth century. For the thirty two years of the New Order era, the longest period of continuous government since the end of colonialism, a cultural policy model was pursued that shared many features with colonial era policy. This book draws attention to the importance of the colonial context for the features of postcolonial cultural policy, particularly during periods of authoritarian rule. Indonesian cultural policy has for the most part been ‘localist’—focused on retaining the authenticity of Indonesian culture through tightly controlled interaction with outside forces. A reconsideration of the context of Indonesian culture in what is now a globalized system of cultural circulation could challenge cultural policy through centering on a different set of problems.
