The Maritime Dimensions Of Independent East Timor
Australia has long had important maritime interests in the Timor Sea which have expanded as a result of developments in the law of the sea and Australia's strategic engagement with Indonesia. Commencing in the 1970's and extending through till the 1990s Australia and Indonesia engaged in a collaborative process of delimiting their respective maritime boundaries in the Timor Sea and adjacent areas. The east Timorese vote for self determination in 1999 and the current transitional aragements which are in place for East Timor to eventually emerge as a new Independent State have implications for Australia's sovereign rights over the living and non-living resources of the TImor Sea, as well as for Australia's maritime interests in the region generally.
