UNESCO JAKARTA OFFICE ANNUAL REPORT 1997
The UNESCO Jakarta Office is a Regional Office. We have particular responsibility for UNESCO’s activities in science, technology, environmental and informatics activity across East and Southeast Asia, also working in partnership with UNESCO Offices in Beijing, Phnom Penh, Kuala Lumpur and Apia, and with the UNESCO Offices in Bangkok and New Delhi. But the Jakarta Office is also Representative across all spheres of UNESCO activity in Indonesia and the Philippines, where we have the additional responsibility for UNESCO’s culture and education programmes as well. You will see in the Annual Report the stimulus that such an intersectoral and cross- national mandate allows. As example, a programme for introducing technical and vocational education in Islamic Schools of Indonesia is now being translated into initiatives in Mindanao, the Philippines; a culture-based programme in lrian Jaya has now grown across sectors to address hydrology needs, enterprise development, introduction of tribal peoples to the modern world, and education.
