Abstract/Notes | As we reach the end of the 20th century, the world's cities are experiencing progressive tensions in urban use and structure. Despite piecemeal redevelopment, many major cities are struggling to maintain functional efficiency while sustaining acceptable levels of quality of life. A notable opportunity for successful redevelopment has emerged in rehabilitation of urban waterfront areas, and the present volume examines recreation and tourism as a catalyst for such waterfront redevelopment. Reviewing the experiences of cities in the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, the Caribbean, and Australia, the volume points the way toward a set of principles and guidelines for the achievement of functional, aesthetic, and recreational harmony in urban environments. |
