Abstract/Notes | Although available statistic are poor, the annual commercial catch from the fisheries of the world is approaching 100 million t, a figure which has often been regarded as close to the sustainable limit. In temperate waters of the northern hemisphere, fish stocks of a small number of desirable species have been fished commercially for centuries. In tropical waters, smaller numbers of a much larger range of species are caught more commonly as a critical source of protein, rather than as a source of income. In many countries, subsistence fishing, the catching of fish to eat rather than to sell, results in a total catch that is often several times larger than that from commercial fishing.
