From the mid 1960’s the scientific literature records a significant increase in the number of publications dealing with organic compounds from marine fauna and flora. In Compounds from Marine Organisms, Volume 1, three major aims have been established: (1) to draw attention to the marine environment as a source of novel organic substances, in many cases displaying structural types differing from those available from non-marine sources; (2) to present an accurate record of organic compounds derived from mrine organisms and; (3) to indicate where biological, microbiological or pharmacological activity has been reported.
